Andrew Carnegie’s Legacy
Andrew Carnegie was one of the great Scots of the 19th century. From humble beginnings in Dunfermline, he emigrated to America aged 12 and later became the richest man in the world. A steel tycoon, stockbroker, writer, lecturer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, he was born in 1835 in what is now the only surviving weaver’s cottage in Dunfermline.
His life left a huge legacy worldwide, especially in his hometown of Dunfermline where he gifted the Pittencrieff Estate to the people of the town and, through the work of The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, has funded many public buildings in Dunfermline thus continuing to help his birthplace and ‘add value to the lives of the people of the town’.

Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum
Visit the only surviving weaver’s cottage in Dunfermline and the birthplace of international entrepreneur and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Discover the story of the town’s most famous son and experience life in 19th century Dunfermline whilst admiring an extensive collection of unique historic photographs, presentation caskets, fossils, personal possessions, art and scientific equipment.

Pittencrieff Park
Escape the buzz of the town centre and relax in the fresh air at this beautiful sprawling 76-acre park purchased in 1902 by Andrew Carnegie, and gifted to Dunfermline in 1903. Situated only a short walk from the heart of the town, here you can explore enchanting woodlands, impressive formal gardens and large grassed areas perfect for little legs to burn off some energy. Carnegie Hall
Marvel at the grandeur of this stunning art deco theatre before taking a seat at your chosen performance. Choose from a wide variety of entertainment including music, drama and comedy to dance, cinema and children’s shows. You can also enjoy a pre-theatre drink with some of the best views in Dunfermline of the Forth Bridges. The hall was named in honour of Andrew Carnegie and was commissioned in the early 20th century to provide Dunfermline with a public hall for the arts.

The Carnegie Tiffany Window, Dunfermline Abbey
Be sure to visit the Abbey Church located in Dunfermline’s Heritage Quarter, where you can admire the splendour of a spectacular window made by Tiffany Glass and commissioned over 100 years ago by Andrew Carnegie as a memorial to his family. It truly is a sight to behold and well worth a visit. Whilst at the Abbey Church, you can also explore the exhibition that describes the rediscovery of King Robert the Bruce’s tomb.

Carnegie Leisure Centre
Andrew Carnegie’s first gift to Dunfermline was funding for swimming baths that became the current Carnegie Leisure Centre opened in 1902. The building now boasts a fantastic range of activities for visitors to enjoy including three swimming pools, a health suite, gym, climbing wall, adventure play centre and much more!
