The Auld Grey Toun

Dunfermline has been a centre of bustle and life for almost 900 years, a marketplace with its own distinctive traditions.

Dunfermline was established as a royal burgh by King David I in the 1100s, and for hundreds of years the city had distinctive rights and privileges. The High Street has always been a place for shopping and commerce, from the booths of medieval craftsmen to the Co-Operative store of modern times. Dunfermline’s sports clubs have a long history going back to Victorian times, and the Children’s Gala has been celebrating local young people for over a hundred years.
