People have been coming to Dunfermline on pilgrimage for over 700 years, drawn by the shrine and the inspiring story of St Margaret.
In 1250 Queen Margaret was canonised and a new shrine built as an extension to the Abbey to house her relics. This firmly established Dunfermline as an important centre of European pilgrimage, until the Reformation in 1560. In 1899 an annual St Margaret pilgrimage was re-established, and was attracting numbers of around 10,000 people in the 1960s. In 2008 a relic of St Margaret returned to Dunfermline.
